This is part two of our series where we are going to walk through a full stack development exercise that we have put together for our Unosquare University curriculum. With our internal University we are creating a place where we can centrally house various courses and learning materials for the technologies where our teammates excel. Some of our curriculum has been helpful to software development professionals outside of Unosquare, and we hope that you find this interesting and helpful.

This post is the second in our series on RESTful API building. Remember that our goal is to create a RESTful API using Java EE and three UI applications using some of the most popular JavaScript frameworks/libraries - AngularJS, ReactJS and VueJs.

In part one we ended with a working API and now we are going to create our database using MySQL 8.0. Now, you may notice that the file names in some of the images in this post are in Spanish, but we think that this is easy enough to follow along. The development talent at Unosquare is bilingual, and so are our File Explorers ; )

Recruiting has always been an incredibly time-intensive process, and it has been increasing in recent years. When you’re dealing with upwards of 5,000 candidates per year, recruiting becomes a numbers game that’s very hard to win. Coupled by the fact that the best candidates are only in the market for ten days, identifying only the top 5% of candidates that apply as potential members of our team in a fast way makes it a challenging task to cover our open positions.

There have been many changes in web development technologies since I began working as a software developer. My CV shows that I have worked with PHP and Java under monolithic architectures. I am familiar with Java EE with JSP, JSF and Java SE with Spring MVC, as well. So, I think it’s fair to say that I have exposure to everything in a whole solution.

As part of our overarching goal to create a company culture where our employees have the opportunity and support necessary to do their best work, we are creating a place where we can centrally house all the content, tools and training materials that they may need. We are creating Unosquare University with the goal of preparing our employees, and our company, for their next assignments and our next clients because we believe that by continually learning and growing, we will all succeed.

Starting a new job is stressful. There are so many new people to meet, names to remember, procedures to learn, routines to follow, and policies to understand which can make those first few days and weeks feel pretty overwhelming. At Unosquare, we know that the three-hour new employee orientation from HR isn't enough to cover everything a team member needs to know. Furthermore, when we follow a traditional format of delivering a large amount of information all at once, valuable, but nuanced information is sometimes overlooked. We need our team members to consider different aspects of our company culture, workplace procedures, and all the activities that take place during and after work.

I’m incredibly proud that Unosquare made the 2019 Inc. 5000 - the list of the 5,000 fastest-growing companies in the U.S. But even more significant is that it’s our fifth year in a row to achieve this status. Since it started in 1982, only four percent of companies have made the list five times. Additionally, this year, Unosquare celebrated its 10th birthday, which adds another layer of context to this honor: our first five years set the foundation for us to grow at an astonishing rate.
